Through the Veda McKnight Community Leadership Empowerment Institute (CLEI), local Clients Council are primarily responsible for assessing the needs and assets of their communities, setting priorities, deciding how to respond, and securing the needed resources for their personal and community betterment.
The Veda McKnight Institute is made up of seven clusters:
Legal Referrals
- GCC is a partner of Georgia Legal Services Program (GLSP).
- GCC helps publicize GLSP circuit riding in rural communities where there is no GLSP office.
- Provides Legal Aid-website training and assistance.
- GCC makes legal referrals to GLSP
Self/Lay Advocacy
- GCC prepares and trains member advocates to assist with administrative hearings such as, housing issues, food stamps, medicaid, TANF, disabilities hearings, public school and SSI hearings, etc.
- Refers victims of domestic violence to obtain Temporary Protection Orders (TPO's)
Leadership Development
- GCC provides leadership and board training.
- GCC members, leaders and advocates are encouraged to serve on local, state, and national boards to represent the interest of the poor.
- GCC also collaborates with a diverse population including, but not limited to: Hispanic, and other ethnic groups.
Non-Profit Community and Economic Development
- GCC provides technical assistance and referrals from taking a vison, developing the business plan, record keeping and proper documentation.
- Examples range from home-based daycare to affordable housing.
Workforce Development/Micro-Enterprise
- GCC works with other organizations to develop a competent workforce for a livable wage.
- GCC supports CEDs and Micro Enterprise initiatives through training and referrals.
Fundraising/Resource Development
- GCC has identified Community Development Block Grants to build housing, water and sewage lines and pave streets.
- GCC can help new non-profit organizations obtain their 501 (c ) (3) incorporation.
Computer Technology
- Knowledge and access to technology is imperative for GCC members for personal and community development.
- Legal assistance available on website….statewide communication.
